How big a dining table do I need for six?

Allow about 24″ (610 mm) of edge per person: a rectangle around 72″ × 36″ (1829 × 914 mm) seats six, and so does a round table 54–60″ (1372–1524 mm) across. The rectangular dining table for six block, chairs included, takes 89⅝″ × 54⅛″ (2275 × 1375 mm).

How much room does a dining set need around it?

Add 36″ (914 mm) from the table edge on every side where chairs pull out, and 42–48″ (1067–1219 mm) where people walk behind seated guests. Because the chairs are drawn in, measure from the table edge rather than from the outline of the block, which for the dining table with eight chairs is 10′-5¾″ × 78⅛″ (3193 × 1984 mm).
